Mayhaw Trees

Description

Mayhaw fruit trees are grown in the southern US and produce large, deep red fruit with pink flesh. They are one of the earliest flowering varieties.

Mayhaw Trees

Mayhaw trees (Crataegus aestivalis, C. rufula, or C. opaca) are native to the southeastern United States. They are small trees, typically growing to be 15-20 feet tall. Mayhaw trees have a rounded crown and spreading branches. The leaves are dark green and oval-shaped. The flowers are white and fragrant, and bloom in the spring. The fruit is a small, red berry that ripens in late April or early May.

Mayhaw berries are tart and have a slightly sour flavor. They are not typically eaten fresh, but are used to make jelly, jam, wine, and other products. Mayhaw jelly is a popular Southern delicacy and is known for its unique flavor.

Mayhaw trees are relatively easy to grow and care for. They prefer full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil. Mayhaw trees are tolerant of a wide range of soil conditions, including wet and poorly drained soils. They are also tolerant of drought and heat.

To grow a mayhaw tree, plant it in the spring or fall. Water the tree regularly, especially during the first year after planting. Fertilize the tree once a year in the spring with a balanced fertilizer. Prune the tree in the late winter or early spring to remove dead or diseased branches and to maintain the desired shape.

Mayhaw trees are a beautiful and versatile addition to any landscape. They provide food and habitat for wildlife, including birds, squirrels, and raccoons. Mayhaw trees also help to improve air quality by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen.

Here are some tips for growing mayhaw trees:

  • Choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil.
  • Plant the tree in the spring or fall.
  • Water the tree regularly, especially during the first year after planting.
  • Fertilize the tree once a year in the spring with a balanced fertilizer.
  • Prune the tree in the late winter or early spring to remove dead or diseased branches and to maintain the desired shape.

With proper care, your mayhaw tree will thrive for many years to come and provide you with delicious fruit and a beautiful landscape.

Note: The plant is shipped in its pot, firmly secured with several layers of clear tape, thereby avoiding any shuffling and moving during transit. The plant reaches you with minimal damage- very safe and secure. We have been shipping plants like this for several years (plant are sometimes shipped in smaller pots for safety and ease of shipping). Most plants go dormant in fall and winter and will lose most of their leaves - looking dead and dry - very normal. They will flush out in spring.

We cannot send ship some plants and some sizes to California due to restrictions placed by department of agriculture.

Note
Please note that the plant will be shipped in its pot, securely fastened with multiple layers of clear tape to prevent any shifting or damage during transit. This ensures that the plant arrives to you with minimal damage, safely and securely. We have been employing this method for shipping plants for several years, occasionally using smaller pots for added safety and convenience during transit. It's important to understand that many plants enter a dormant state during the fall and winter months, resulting in the loss of most leaves and appearing dry or lifeless. This is a natural process, and come springtime, they will begin to regrow and thrive once again. Please be aware that due to regulations set by the Department of Agriculture, there are certain plants and sizes that we are unable to ship to California. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
