Chives Herb Plant
Chives are a member of the onion family and are native to Asia and Europe. They are known for their mild onion flavor and their ability to grow in a variety of climates. Chives are a popular herb in cooking and are used in a variety of dishes, including soups, stews, salads, and omelets.
Here are some tips for growing chives:
- Chives prefer full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil.
- Water chives regularly, especially during the first growing season.
- Fertilize chives in the spring with a balanced fertilizer.
- Harvest chives throughout the growing season.
Chives can be grown in the ground or in containers. To grow chives in the ground, simply sow seeds or plant seedlings in the spring. To grow chives in containers, use a well-draining potting mix and plant the chives 1-2 inches deep.
Chives are a relatively low-maintenance plant, but they do require some care. Be sure to water chives regularly and fertilize them in the spring. You should also harvest the chives regularly to encourage new growth.
Here are some ideas for how to use chives in your cooking:
- Add chives to soups, stews, and salads for a mild onion flavor.
- Sprinkle chives over omelets, potatoes, and other dishes before serving.
- Make a chive dip by combining chives with mayonnaise, sour cream, and herbs.
- Use chives to garnish dishes such as deviled eggs and seafood.
Chives are a versatile and flavorful herb that can be used in a variety of dishes. They are also a relatively easy plant to grow, making them a great addition to any garden.
Additional tips:
- Chives can be grown from seed or from divisions. To divide chives, simply dig up the plant and carefully divide the root ball into two or more sections. Replant the divisions immediately.
- Chives are a perennial plant, which means that they will come back year after year. However, the leaves will die back in the fall and regrow in the spring.
- Chives are relatively pest- and disease-resistant. However, they can be susceptible to aphids and onion thrips. If you see any pests on your chives, treat them immediately with an insecticidal soap or neem oil.
Chives are a great addition to any kitchen garden. They are easy to grow and can be used in a variety of dishes.
Note: The plant is shipped in its pot, firmly secured with several layers of clear tape, thereby avoiding any shuffling and moving during transit. The plant reaches you with minimal damage- very safe and secure. We have been shipping plants like this for several years (plant are sometimes shipped in smaller pots for safety and ease of shipping). Most plants go dormant in fall and winter and will lose most of their leaves - looking dead and dry - very normal. They will flush out in spring.
We cannot send ship some plants and some sizes to California due to restrictions placed by department of agriculture.
