Chinese Chestnut Tree
The Chinese chestnut tree (Castanea mollissima) is a deciduous tree native to China, Taiwan, and Korea. It is a popular ornamental tree in many parts of the world, and its nuts are also edible.
Chinese chestnut trees can grow up to 60 feet tall and 30 feet wide. They have a broad, rounded crown and dark green leaves. The leaves turn yellow in the fall before dropping.
Chinese chestnut trees produce edible nuts that are similar to American chestnuts, but they are slightly smaller and sweeter. The nuts are typically harvested in the fall and can be eaten fresh, roasted, or boiled.
Chinese chestnut trees are relatively easy to grow and care for. They prefer full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil. They are also tolerant of a wide range of soil types and pH levels. Chinese chestnut trees are also quite drought-tolerant once established.
Here are some tips for growing Chinese chestnut trees:
- Choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil.
- Plant the tree in the spring or fall.
- Water the tree regularly, especially during the first year after planting.
- Fertilize the tree in the spring with a balanced fertilizer.
- Mulch around the tree to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.
- Prune the tree in the late winter or early spring to remove dead or damaged branches and to shape the plant.
Creative ideas for using Chinese chestnut trees:
- Plant a Chinese chestnut tree as a specimen tree in your yard.
- Plant a row of Chinese chestnut trees to create a privacy screen or windbreak.

Note: The plant is shipped in its pot, firmly secured with several layers of clear tape, thereby avoiding any shuffling and moving during transit. The plant reaches you with minimal damage- very safe and secure. We have been shipping plants like this for several years (plant are sometimes shipped in smaller pots for safety and ease of shipping). Most plants go dormant in fall and winter and will lose most of their leaves - looking dead and dry - very normal. They will flush out in spring.
We cannot send ship some plants and some sizes to California due to restrictions placed by department of agriculture.
