Note
Please note that the plant will be shipped in its pot, securely fastened with multiple layers of clear tape to prevent any shifting or damage during transit. This ensures that the plant arrives to you with minimal damage, safely and securely. We have been employing this method for shipping plants for several years, occasionally using smaller pots for added safety and convenience during transit. It's important to understand that many plants enter a dormant state during the fall and winter months, resulting in the loss of most leaves and appearing dry or lifeless. This is a natural process, and come springtime, they will begin to regrow and thrive once again. Please be aware that due to regulations set by the Department of Agriculture, there are certain plants and sizes that we are unable to ship to California. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Product Details

Description

Elderberries are ripening right now — per University of New Hampshire Extension, American elderberry fruit turns dark purple-black between August and September, which is exactly where we are.

Bob Gordon is a named selection prized for berries that ripen uniformly across the cluster and resist shattering (dropping before you can harvest them) — a real improvement over wild-collected elderberry. Plant in full sun for the heaviest bloom and fruit set, in consistently moist soil.

One important note if you're growing for the fruit: raw elderberries and all other parts of the plant are mildly toxic. Berries need to be cooked before eating — that's standard for elderberry and part of why every recipe calls for cooking them into syrup, jelly, or jam rather than eating them fresh off the branch.

It blooms and fruits on the current season's new growth, so pruning in late winter or early spring won't cost you next year's harvest.

Grown and shipped from our nursery in Conyers, Georgia, backed by our 30-Day Plant Guarantee and free shipping on orders over $29.
