Vidal Blanc is a white hybrid grape variety that is known for its versatility and ability to produce high-quality wines in a variety of climates. It is a cross between the Vitis vinifera grape Ugni Blanc (also known as Trebbiano Toscano) and another hybrid variety, Rayon d'Or. Vidal Blanc was developed in the 1930s by French grape breeder Jean Louis Vidal, who was hoping to create a grape that could be used to produce cognac in the cold climate of western France.

However, Vidal Blanc's true potential was realized when it was brought to Canada and the northeastern United States in the mid-20th century. These regions are known for their cold winters and short growing seasons, but Vidal Blanc is able to thrive in these conditions. It is also resistant to many pests and diseases, making it a relatively low-maintenance grape to grow.

Vidal Blanc can be used to produce a variety of wine styles, including dry, semi-dry, sweet, and ice wine. Dry Vidal Blanc wines are typically light-bodied and refreshing, with flavors of citrus, peach, and apricot. Sweet Vidal Blanc wines are often made from grapes that have been harvested late in the season, when they have had a chance to develop more sugar. These wines can have flavors of honey, tropical fruits, and candied citrus.

Ice wine is a special type of sweet wine that is made from grapes that have been frozen on the vine. Vidal Blanc is one of the most popular grapes used for ice wine production, as it retains its acidity even when frozen. Ice wines are typically full-bodied and intense, with flavors of peach, apricot, and honey.

Vidal Blanc is a versatile grape that can be enjoyed on its own or paired with a variety of foods. Dry Vidal Blanc wines are a good choice for seafood, poultry, and light pasta dishes. Sweet Vidal Blanc wines can be paired with desserts, such as fruit pies and cheesecake. Ice wines are often served as a dessert wine, but they can also be paired with savory dishes, such as foie gras and blue cheese.

Here are some of the regions where Vidal Blanc is grown:

  • Canada: Ontario, British Columbia, Nova Scotia
  • United States: New York, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Virginia, North Carolina, Rhode Island

Vidal Blanc is a popular grape in these regions because it is able to thrive in cold climates and produce high-quality wines.

Note: The plant is shipped in its pot, firmly secured with several layers of clear tape, thereby avoiding any shuffling and moving during transit. The plant reaches you with minimal damage- very safe and secure. We have been shipping plants like this for several years (plant are sometimes shipped in smaller pots for safety and ease of shipping). Most plants go dormant in fall and winter and will lose most of their leaves - looking dead and dry - very normal. They will flush out in spring.

We cannot send ship some plants and some sizes to California due to restrictions placed by department of agriculture.

This ensures that the plant arrives to you with minimal damage, safely and securely. We have been employing this method for shipping plants for several years, occasionally using smaller pots for added safety and convenience during transit. It's important to understand that many plants enter a dormant state during the fall and winter months, resulting in the loss of most leaves and appearing dry or lifeless. This is a natural process, and come springtime, they will begin to regrow and thrive once again. Please be aware that due to regulations set by the Department of Agriculture, there are certain plants and sizes that we are unable to ship to California. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
